The June Mid Week Runners traded cold morning fog for bright winter sunshine, starting their day with coffee and treats at Bourkies Bakehouse in Woodend. Fortified and refreshed, the group forged north to Castlemaine to explore Buda Historic Home & Garden, a remarkable Victorian villa set in sprawling historic grounds.
Divided into two groups, the 29-strong club was guided through the estate, uncovering its unique 119-year history. Originally built in 1861, the home was purchased in 1863 by Hungarian silversmith Erno Leviny. He expanded the house to accommodate his growing family, which included his wife Bertha and their 10 children. Remarkably, the home remained in the Leviny family for over a century.
The five unmarried daughters spent their lives at Buda, preserving their father's artistic legacy alongside their own creative talents. Today, the villa remains extraordinary for retaining its original decor, intricate metalwork (notably by daughter Dorothy), and stunning grounds featuring a Bunya Bunya pine gifted by famous botanist Ferdinand von Mueller.
Following the tour, the group travelled south to Five Flags Hotel in Campbells Creek. Settling at long tables before a glowing fire, members enjoyed a convivial lunch. A huge thanks to the Mid Week Runners team for yet another excellent day out!
Save the Date: The next Mid Week Run is scheduled for Wednesday, 22 July. Full details will be announced shortly!
