August Midweek Run: A Bridge Across Time

Our August Midweek Run brought perfect weather and fascinating history together for 22 members across seven club cars and modern vehicles. Under a cool, bright morning sky, the group headed out to Redesdaleto marvel at the historic Campaspe River bridge, which was flowing fast after a wet week.

Members gathered to admire this impressive 19th-century engineering marvel while learning about its chaotic history. Originally shipped from England in 1859 for a crossing over the Yarra River, the ironwork survived a fierce ship fire, was scuttled in sea water, and sat uninsured. After years of being hawked around amidst corruption and bribery scandals, it was bought at a knockdown price by local shires and finally completed in 1868. Listening to the timber deck rattle as traffic passed, our members couldn't help but appreciate the enduring nature of infrastructure delays!

The historic theme continued into lunch at Mac's Irish Hotel in Kilmore. Built seven years before the bridge, the pub features the exact same style of massive bluestone blocks. Members enjoyed a hearty pub lunch-with a traditional Guinness proving to be the perfect accompaniment-while reflecting on a wonderful day out.

A big thank you to Pam and the crew for organizing another highly memorable run!

A huge thank you to Greg for providing this fantastic, detailed story. If you would like to join in on the Midweek Runs, don't forget to RSVP for the next event.
